Decade vs. Decade

With today’s heavy product demand, it seems like new pieces are released endlessly, and it becomes harder to pinpoint what will be remembered as the iconic pieces of this decade.

One of the struggles that affect the consumer viewpoint of society is “Do I want something because I actually like it, or do I want it because the fashion icons are wearing it?

There is a reason why companies and magazines take high interest in famous instagrammers /youtubers/bloggers. Essentially, it's easy to persuade large groups of consumers together because if the icon likes it, then so will the common consumer. As you reflect on what you wish you could have, or what you put in your online shopping bag, ask yourself this. Icons very much persuade you and me, yes? But how much is too much? We add them on instagram, twitter, snapchat, periscope and whatever the latest social app is in the app store today. The icons of the past influenced us by photos in magazines or on runways, while now it's possible for them to answer directly to what we ask.

Are our icons too close to us though? Are icons supposed to be relatable and interactive with us? Or have our “icons of today” crossed the threshold of it's actually meaning: a picture, an image. Essentially, something that we wish we could be, yet we cannot. So it is revered, and we are inspired by. As time passes, society changes and so does its perspective. Maybe our interactiveness with icons is an icon itself. Or maybe, the icon is yet to surface upon us because it has flown past our attention this whole time. Only time will tell.
